Egoism and Blogging »

All a person needs is an internet connection, a blogging account which can be obtained for free and some form of literacy. It is no wonder that blogging has become the most popular form of self publication — long gone are the days where only the techno-elite could manipulate the internet. Even my mum could maintain a blog.

So why is there a tinge of elitism attached to the notion? Arguably, blogging is an extension of the ego that perpetuates relevant and irrelevant opinions to a mass audience. The ego is inflated by elitism in a logical cycle of self indulgence. However with personality fluctuations demonstrated in blogs, doesn’t the ego change face too?

Perhaps that is why blogging is so appealing to so many people. The ego isn’t just fed through a singular form but through a multifaceted personality, satisfying all aspects of the self. Not many bloggers can honestly say they change their personality to suit their every whim — after all readership relies on consistency — however blogging provides an expressive playground for whatever is on the author’s mind no matter how trivial or deviant.

How do you think our egos and cyclical personalities we all display on the internet interact, and how do you think it affects our writing as authors? Alternatively, how does it affect us as readers?

You can drop the literacy you know, most bloggers don’t seem to posses any XP

As for elitism, if this is a sort of continuation to the forum post, or at any rate along the same lines, it’s not really the blogging that makes people elite cunts.

As far as I’m concerned, anyone who considers him/herself elite by means of his/her blog is trying too hard. My favorite bloggers are actually people who’re always wondering why others read about crappy mundane stories.

Now 1337 coding… THAT is a completely different matter. XP

Awh, Vera but I like literacy :D It is a continuation of sorts, I suppose in the end it’s all going into my dissertation in one form or another.

As for elitism, I’d like to think that it’s a mixture of arrogance and self-indulgence. It may have negative connotations but I don’t think it really matters inside blogging. It’s really taken on a weird definition within this circle anyway.

1337 is a completely different story, but I never thought of that :o

When I said “drop the literacy”, I was referring to the definition that you provided. Most are severely lacking in that area :P

Your dissertation? So cool! I wish I could have such a cool essay/diploma/dissertation theme :)
